The Weekly Pour: Immortality, Secrets, and the Catskills

While The Book Lounge—your future home for new fiction releases, wine, and craft beer—isn't quite ready to pour your glass just yet, our obsession with great storytelling doesn't take a day off. We are officially in the "curation phase," hand-selecting every title to ensure our opening-day shelves are a bibliophile's dream.

Since we can’t host you in person this Tuesday, we’re bringing the lounge vibes to your screen with a deep dive into today’s most anticipated new fiction book release.

New Fiction Spotlight: The Fountain by Casey Scieszka

If you’ve ever wondered what it would actually feel like to live forever—not the sparkly, Hollywood version, but the gritty reality of outlasting everyone you’ve ever loved—then Casey Scieszka’s The Fountain is your next must-read obsession.

The Plot: We meet Vera Van Valkenburgh, who has been twenty-six years old for exactly one hundred and eighty-eight years. While she can heal from any physical wound, the psychological scars of nearly two centuries are much harder to mend. Returning to her ancestral roots in the Catskills, Vera isn't searching for the secret to eternal life; she’s looking for the "off" switch.

Why We Love It: It’s a haunting, atmospheric literary mystery that explores the weight of memory and the price of staying behind while the world moves on. Scieszka’s prose is as sharp as flint, and the forest setting is so vivid you can almost smell the damp earth and pine of the New York wilderness. It’s exactly the kind of character-driven fiction we can’t wait to discuss with you over a drink.

The "Under Construction" Drink Pairings

We might not be behind the bar yet, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying a book and bottle pairing at home. To match the moody, timeless atmosphere of The Fountain, here is what we recommend sipping while you read this week:

  • The Wine Pairing: L’Ecole No. 41 Chenin Blanc

Like Vera, this varietal has a long history and deep roots. It’s crisp and vibrant with notes of white floral and stone fruit, but carries a surprising "old soul" complexity that lingers on the palate.

  • The Beer Pairing: Mother Earth Brew Co. 'Cali Creatin’' Peaches & Cream Pale Ale

A nod to the "Fountain" itself. This brew is creamy and slightly sweet, reminiscent of a summer afternoon that never ends. It’s refreshing but has enough body to stand up to a deep literary dive.

  • The Mocktail Pairing: The Elder-Wood Spritz

Stir together elderflower syrup, fresh lemon, and a sprig of rosemary, then top with sparkling water. It tastes like a walk through a hidden forest—mysterious, botanical, and entirely rejuvenating.

Meridian Bookstore Construction Update

The space is being framed out, so we can already picture the bookshelves we ordered along the back wall, filled with all of our fave fiction titles. We are on track for our Grand Opening in Meridian soon, and we can’t wait to show you the finished space.

In the meantime, keep an eye on The Book Lounge blog every Tuesday at noon. We’ll keep the recommendations coming so your "To-Be-Read" pile is ready for our opening day.

Stay curious and keep reading (even through the dust),
