The Weekly Pour: The Tarot Trials by Katee Robert

Oh, TBL friends, you know we love a good Romantasy here at the Lounge and New Release Tuesday is dealing us a deck we cannot wait to play, and it is not the kind you shuffle for solitaire. The Tarot Trials — the first book in a brand-new fantasy series from Katee Robert (yes, the Dark Olympus one, Neon Gods and all) — hits our shelves today, October 20th, and we have been not-so-patiently waiting for this one since we heard she was trying her hand at straight-up fantasy. Reader, it was worth it.

About the Book

Kestrel has trained her entire life to compete in the Tarot Trials — the deadly tournament that decides who joins the five ruling Cinque. It is the same seat of power her mother was meant to hold twenty-two years ago, before she was executed for treason she almost certainly did not commit. Now it falls to Kestrel to take up her mother's mantle as Champion of the Moon, master her new powers of shadow and illusion, and find out exactly who dealt the killing blow all those years ago — all while navigating a tournament where every alliance is a lie waiting to happen. The real game was never about what Kestrel has to do to win. It is about who she needs to kill to survive. (We told you. Not solitaire.)

Genre: Fantasy / Romantasy

Perfect for fans of: Neon Gods by Katee Robert (same author, Dark Olympus #1), The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent, and A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab.

This Week’s Pour

A tournament where the prize is political power and the entry fee is occasionally your life calls for something that feels like a win no matter how the cards fall — so we are pouring the Veer “Can-paign” Champagne. Bubbly, a little dangerous to drink too fast, and exactly what you order the second you survive a round of the Trials (or, let's be honest, just finish the chapter). We regret nothing about the pun and we will not be taking questions.

Not drinking tonight? Order a Meet Cute hot tea — because in the Trials, timing is everything, and so is getting your mocktail refilled before the next round starts.

Come Curl Up With It

Pull up a seat in your corner of the shop, order your copy at the counter, and get ready to have feelings about whichever Champion you decide to root for (we already have one, we are not proud of it). Tag us @thebookloungeid when you place your bets on who makes it out of the Trials — book club, we see a very spirited debate in our future. Grab a seat right here in Meridian, Idaho, and let's talk tarot.

Happy Reading (and Sipping!),
