We are in the home stretch of October when the string lights go up, the cider comes out, and every single one of us starts side-eyeing the shelves for something that'll make us sleep with one eye open. Good news: that's our whole job. Here's what we're pulling for your countdown to Halloween — a little gothic, a little witchy, a little "maybe don't read this one alone."
Six to Read Before the 31st
1. Mexican Gothic — Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A crumbling English manor transplanted into the Mexican countryside, a family with rot in its walls (literally), and a heroine who refuses to leave her cousin behind no matter how bad the house wants her gone. This is the gold standard of modern gothic horror — slow dread that pays off hard.
2. The Haunting of Hill House — Shirley Jackson
The one that basically wrote the rulebook for "haunted house that's really a haunted person." If you've never read Jackson and only know the Netflix version, do yourself a favor and go to the source — it's shorter, meaner, and somehow scarier for saying less.
3. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires — Grady Hendrix
A true-crime-obsessed book club in 1990s Charleston figures out there's a vampire in the neighborhood roughly three books before anyone believes them. Funny, gory, and a genuinely great choice if your own book club wants something with teeth (sorry).
4. And Then There Were None — Agatha Christie
Ten strangers, one island, zero ways off. The original locked-room nightmare is still the sharpest one on the shelf — if you loved our Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel pick a few weeks back, this is the Christie that started it all.
5. Practical Magic — Alice Hoffman
Less "scream," more "shiver and smile" — two witch sisters, a family curse, and a small town that's never quite sure what to make of the Owens women. We keep coming back to this one as a comp title for a reason: it's cozy-witchy done right, and it belongs on every Halloween stack.
6. Dive Bar at the End of the Road — Kelley Armstrong
Our own October 6th Weekly Pour pick, and it earns a second mention here: five strangers trapped overnight in a remote dive bar after a highway pileup, with something supernatural circling outside. If you missed it the first time around, this is your sign.
What to Sip While You Spook Yourself
Our seasonal Blood Moon Sangria is exactly the kind of "take two sips & repeat" drink this list deserves — cozy enough for a slow-burn gothic, with enough bite for the vampire book club pick. Settle into one of our corners with it and whichever title on this list is calling your name loudest.
If your own club is looking for a themed pick, several of tonight's six are genuine book-club gold — Mexican Gothic and The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires both discuss beautifully over a shared board and a round of ciders.
