Veer'd Winery: Where Classic Meets Curious

Here at The Book Lounge — Meridian's independent bookstore — we believe a good story isn't always found between two covers. That's why we're shining a light on local Treasure Valley makers as part of an ongoing series for April, giving you a sneak peek into what you will find once we open our doors this Spring.

We’re excited to celebrate Veer Wine Project, one of Idaho's most exciting and boundary-pushing wineries, as the first vendor in this series and, hopefully, help you discover your next favorite wine!

The Origin Story

Every great wine starts with a question. For Will Wetmore, Veer's winemaker and founder, that question arrived in 2016 while working as an assistant winemaker at Hat Ranch — a cornerstone of the Idaho wine scene. "I didn't know much about wine other than Hat Ranch," he recalls, "and I was curious what else we could do." The owners gave him room to experiment, and he crafted three or four wines using techniques entirely new to him. People loved them, and the rest — as Will puts it — is history. Veer Wine Project was born from that curiosity, and it hasn't stopped asking questions since.

The Craft

At Veer, the 2024 Idaho Winery of the Year, the philosophy is baked right into the name — and it's one any avid reader will appreciate. Like reaching for an unexpected genre or a debut novel from an unknown author, Veer's winemaking starts with the classics and then deliberately, delightfully goes somewhere else.

"We like to make things a little Veer'd. We start with classic styles and then put our own unique spin on them."

By embracing techniques like whole cluster fermentation, wild yeast, and carbonic maceration — and refusing to stay inside the lines — the team consistently lands on wines that feel both familiar and surprising.

The Idaho Connection

Ask Will about the Idaho wine scene and his answer says a lot about why this state's industry is growing so fast. The community is tight-knit in the best possible way — producers help each other, share knowledge, and celebrate each other's wins. "There is less competition because we all want the industry to be successful," Will explains. "A lot of our peers are our friends, which makes it less business-y and more fun." It's the same spirit that draws us to independent bookstores over big-box retail — community over commerce, curiosity over convenience.

The Perfect Pair

When asked what occasion best suits their wines, Will didn't hesitate. Any Veer'd white wine belongs on a patio on a sunny afternoon — good company, chill vibes, and nowhere to be. We'd add: bring a book. Simple advice, honestly excellent advice.
