The Weekly Pour: Seek the Traitor’s Son by Veronica Roth
Good morning, Treasure Valley book lovers, and welcome back to The Weekly Pour!
At The Book Lounge, we believe every great story deserves an equally great beverage. As we count down the days to our grand opening right here in Meridian, Idaho, we’re continuing our digital toast to the most exciting new fiction hitting shelves. And this week’s release is one we have been waiting on since Veronica Roth—yes, that Veronica Roth—first teased it at New York Comic Con last fall. Today, May 12, 2026, marks the arrival of Seek the Traitor’s Son, the first book in her new Burning Empire series, and we are raising a glass to every reader who stayed up too late reading Divergent and never fully recovered. This one is for you.
About the Book
Veronica Roth built her career on dystopian worlds where ordinary people are forced into extraordinary choices—and Seek the Traitor's Son, the first book in her new Burning Empire series, is the most ambitious world she has built yet. In a far-future Earth, a deadly Fever moves through populations like a plague. Most who contract it die. But a select few are resurrected, permanently changed, and gifted with glimpses of the future. These survivors become the prophets and power brokers of civilization.
Elegy Ahn is a soldier—loyal, grounded, and perfectly content defending her small country of the Cedrae from the powerful Talusar nation. She didn't ask for destiny. But then she and Rava Vidar, the most feared Talusar general alive, are both summoned to hear a prophecy. One of them will lead their people to victory over the other. And at the center of both their fates is the same man—a man, the prophecy declares, that Elegy is going to fall in love with. In one afternoon, Elegy's entire life—her purpose, her future, her certainty—is over.
Kirkus gave it a starred review, calling it a standout genre-bending adventure with a tender romantic streak. Library Journal's starred review praised its complex characters and high action. Olivie Blake called it Roth's most compelling work to date. The sequel is already written. Buckle in.
Perfect for fans of: Divergent, Dune, The Atlas Six, and anyone who loves prophecy, slow-burn romance, and a world that rewards paying attention.
Why We Love It
This is a book for readers who loved Divergent but wanted it bigger, stranger, and written for adults. Roth spent years building this world, and it shows: the Burning Empire is a fully realized universe with its own theology, political structures, and moral ambiguities. Elegy is a magnificent heroine—fierce and practical, genuinely funny, and carrying emotional weight she didn't ask for. The slow-burn romance is agonizing in the best way. And the world's central question—what happens when prophecy tells you exactly who you're supposed to be, and you don't want to be that person?—is one of the most compelling setups in recent genre fiction.
The Pours: Wine or Beer - we’ve got you covered!
Since you can’t join us at the bar just yet, we’ve curated two options from our friends at Cinder Wines and Brown Beard Brewing Co. in Garden City.
Here are our two picks for Seek the Traitor’s Son, whether you’re reaching for a bold red or a craft brew:
The Wine Pairing
Cinder is one of the Treasure Valley’s crown jewels and one of the West’s best urban wineries. This week, we’re pairing the 2023 Tempranillo with our new release.
The Vibe: Bold, commanding, and built for the long game.
Why it works: Cinder’s 2023 Tempranillo is what they call the “Powerhouse” of their lineup, and they mean it. Leather, plum, and heady spice on the nose; powerful tannins on the palate that demand your attention and reward your patience. It’s aged 20 months in French, Hungarian, and American oak—a wine that has earned its authority. That’s Elegy Ahn in a glass: structured, serious, and more complex than anyone expected when they first underestimated her.
Find it: cinderwines.com or visit their tasting room at 107 E 44th St, Garden City. Wed–Sun 1–7pm.
The Beer Pairing
For the craft beer lovers in the Lounge—and we know you’re out there—we’re pouring from Brown Beard Brewing Co., the family- and veteran-owned nano brewery in Garden City built on bold recipes, live music, and a pirate spirit that feels tailor-made for a novel about soldiers and destiny. We’re recommending the Hop Notion West Coast IPA to sip as your savor Seek the Traitor’s Son.
The Vibe: Crisp, assertive, and impossible to ignore.
Why it works: A West Coast IPA is built on precision and confidence—a clean bitterness that doesn’t apologize for itself. That’s Elegy to the letter. She’s a soldier who does her job, trusts her instincts, and doesn’t have time for anyone who wastes hers. Crack this one open for the first hundred pages, when Elegy is still the person she thought she was.
The Idaho connection: Revived from the beloved Crooked Fence Brewing’s original recipe, the Hop Notion is part local legacy, part bold reinvention—a theme that runs straight through the heart of this novel.
Find it: Brown Beard Brewing, 9165 W Chinden Blvd, Garden City · Brown Beard’s Barrel House, 5270 W Chinden Blvd, Garden City · brownbeards.com
