The Book Lounge Edit: What We’re Reading (+ the Perfect Sip for Each)
If you've driven past our space lately, you already know: things are happening. The drywall is going up, the lighting is being obsessed over, and someone on the team has very strong opinions about what kind of chairs we need (we'll let you guess who).
But here's the thing about booklovers — we can't stop reading, even when we're elbow-deep in construction decisions. Our TBR piles don't care about paint swatches. So while we put the final touches on what we hope will become your favorite new corner of Meridian, we figured it was the perfect time to introduce ourselves the most honest way we know how: through the books currently living on our nightstands.
Welcome to The Book Lounge Edit — our monthly roundup of what the team at The Book Lounge is actually reading, plus the drink we think belongs beside it. Fair warning: your own TBR pile is about to grow.
📚 Curator #1: Kelsey Stech
The Book: The Second Death of Locke by V. L. Bovalino
The Vibe: Gritty, emotional romantasy | Intense slow-burn, friends-to-lovers yearning | High Stakes | Magical, Scottish/Icelandic-inspired adventure
Why Kelsey Can't Put It Down:" I’ll be honest: I didn’t think a book could make me feel like I was physically inside a shadow-drenched Scottish castle while sitting on my couch in Meridian. And yet. The Dark Academia atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a letter opener, and Locke’s mystery has this relentless ticking-clock energy that makes ‘just one more chapter’ a genuinely dangerous promise to make to yourself. I finished it faster than I’d like to admit and I have zero regrets."
The Pairing: Kelsey is pouring herself a large glass of an earthy, bold Cabernet Sauvignon. The deep, dark fruit notes and slightly brooding finish are a perfect match for the gothic atmosphere and high stakes of the plot. Think: the kind of wine that belongs next to a flickering candle and a view of fog rolling in. You’re not just reading this book — you’re experiencing it.
📚 Curator #2: Amelia Gale
The Book: Her Soul for a Crown by Alysha Rameera
The Vibe: Opulent Venoms | Ancient Vows | Slow-burn Romantasy | Sri Lankan Mythology
Why Amelia Can't Put It Down: "This book is hitting all the right notes for me — slow-burn tension, royal secrets, mythology, vengeance. It’s giving calculated revenge meets feral cosmic devotion, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. The world-building pulls from Sri Lankan mythology in a way that feels genuinely lush and specific, and the romance is the kind that makes you want to throw the book across the room (in a good way). I’m not sure what I’ll do with myself once I’m finished."
The Pairing: While some might reach for something heavier, Amelia is going bright and bold: a Mango Habanero IPA. The mango brings the tropical warmth of the kingdom, while the habanero provides just enough burn to mirror the slow-simmer romance simmering through every page. It’s unexpected, it’s a little dangerous, and it works completely. Just like this book.
📚 Curator #3: Emily McClung
The Book: Bonds of Hercules by Jasmine Mas
The Vibe: High-Stakes Fantasy Romance | Morally Complex | The book that has absolutely no business being this hard to put down
Why Emily Can't Put It Down: "Okay, full transparency? I'm not entirely sold yet. The "why choose" romance trope and I are still in our situationship era, and keeping track of the character connections requires a level of focus I usually reserve for assembling furniture without instructions. And yet. The plot has me in a chokehold. The stakes are genuinely high, the mystery is relentless, and the momentum just does not let up.”
The Pairing:A "Riddle in a Glass" Red 🍷 Emily is recommending a Petite Sirah or a Mourvèdre because you want a wine that's unapologetically bold and just a little bit difficult. Think inky dark fruit on the surface, then surprise layers of black pepper, leather, or a smoky finish that keeps you second-guessing yourself. Much like this book, it's not trying to be easy or approachable. It has tension. It has complexity. It wants you to lean in and pay attention — which, coincidentally, is exactly what this plot demands of you too.
📚 Curator #4: Kaeleigh Stewart
The Book: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
The Vibe: Wildly Chaotic Sci-Fi Fantasy | Dark Humor | The literary equivalent of someone handing you a live grenade and saying "you're going to love this"
Why Kaeleigh Can't Put It Down:"I don't even know how to explain this book without sounding unhinged, so I'll just say this: it's one of the most genuinely surprising reads I've picked up in a long time. It's chaotic in the best, most intentional way — the kind of chaos that clearly has a very smart person pulling the strings behind the curtain. The dark humor hits harder than it has any right to, and every time I think I know where it's going, it takes a hard left turn into something I absolutely did not see coming. Weird, brilliant, and completely addictive. I am not normal about this book right now.”
The Pairing: Kaeleigh is making a craft cocktail to pair with this read. Meet your new reading companion: The Dungeon Dive 🍹
2 oz dark rum
1 oz coffee liqueur
1 oz spiced simple syrup
Splash of cola
Garnish with a twist of orange
Dark, slightly sweet, with a kick of spice that sneaks up on you — kind of like the plot itself. It's not trying to be a refined, sipping-by-the-fireplace drink. It's a diving headfirst into a monster-filled dungeon drink. Bold, a little dangerous, and surprisingly smooth once you commit. Which, again, is exactly this book.
