Author Spotlight: Kyle Voss on Sci-Fi, Found Family, and Why Stanley Wins
We love nothing more than handing you a book by someone who lives just down the road. This month, we sat down with Meridian-based author Kyle Voss, whose sci-fi/fantasy novel Failed Extinction: Death of a System throws a whole system of planets into chaos — and somehow makes room for the kind of character work that sticks with you long after the last page.
A Twin Falls kid turned Treasure Valley writer, Kyle also happens to be a new regular here at The Book Lounge (we're not blushing, you're blushing). Here's our conversation.

The Idaho link: How does the Gem State sneak into your writing?
More than you'd think. By book three, Idaho gets a direct shout-out through the South Hills, and the scenery for parts of Merik is loosely based on the country around Stanley. If a setting in the series makes you feel like you've been there — you might have.
The big idea: Give us the checkout-line pitch.
One sentence, no warm-up: If there were a system of planets looking to fold Earth into their ranks, what happens when one of them starts a war with all the rest?

The craft: What surprised you most while writing this one?
That trauma doesn't just fade with time — it shows up uninvited in the small, ordinary moments of a day. It's never tidy, and it wears a lot of different faces. The characters in Failed Extinction have to keep working on themselves in the middle of genuinely terrible, wild circumstances, and watching them do that turned out to be the heart of the book.
Local love: Which Idaho author should we be reading right now?
Hannah Stewart. A wonderful person and the author of Deception's Rose, which looks fantastic — it's near the top of the to-be-read pile (already purchased, no excuses).
The unasked question: What do you wish people would ask?
About the favorite character to write — which isn't the same as the favorite character. That honor goes to Selena, the primary villain of book one. Her point of view was easily the most fascinating to write, even though she's nobody's idea of a sweetheart.
