Behind the Scaffolding: Unmasking a Villain with Lady Tremaine

Hello from the construction zone!

It’s Tuesday at 12:00 PM, and while the "Open" sign isn’t hanging in our window in Meridian just yet, we couldn't think of a better way to pass the time than by diving into the books that will define our fiction-only shelves.

The Feature: Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser

We couldn’t wait to talk about the book currently sitting at the top of our "Opening Week" display list. Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser is the definitive "villain" origin story we’ve been waiting for.

Forget the cartoonish cruelty you remember. Hochhauser gives us Etheldreda—a woman navigating the brutal social politics of a world that treats widows like property. It’s a story of survival, motherhood, and the sharp-edged reality of what it takes to protect your own when the world is rooting for your downfall. It’s atmospheric, biting, and exactly the kind of "complicated woman" fiction we can’t get enough of.

The Lounge Pairings (Coming Soon to Your Glass!)

Once our doors are officially open, these are the pairings we could be serving alongside this read. For now, consider this your shopping list for a cozy night in.

The Wine Pairing: A Bold, Dark Syrah

To honor Etheldreda’s steeliness, you need a wine with structure. We’ll be stocking a Syrah that hits you with dark fruit and black pepper—bold enough to stand up to a royal ball, but with enough "earth" to remind you of the crumbling estate she’s trying to save.

The Mocktail Pairing: "The Bitter Crown"

Since we’re still in the "mockup" phase of our menu, here’s a drink that captures the elegance and the sting of the novel.

The Profile: Tart, herbal, and sophisticated.

The Build: Fresh grapefruit juice, a splash of sophisticated tonic, and a homemade rosemary syrup to bring out those botanical, forest-floor notes.

The Vibe: Best enjoyed while wearing your best "don't mess with my daughters" expression.

Construction Update:

We are getting a floor! We can’t wait to welcome you into the Lounge very soon to share a glass and a chapter.

Happy Reading!
