Under Construction: Building Foundations with Tayari Jones’s Kin
If you’ve strolled past the shop lately, you’ve probably wondered “are they actually in the construction phase?” We can assure you, we are definitely in the construction phase and things are movin’ and groovin’ - but it’s a lot of work to make sure the foundation is strong enough to hold thousands of stories [and a very heavy wine fridge].
It felt oddly poetic, then, to crack open Tayari Jones’s Kin amidst all of the construction.
Jones is the ultimate architect of the human heart. In Kin, she explores the invisible blueprints that make up a family. When protagonists Vernice and Annie collide after years apart, they realize that while they’ve built very different lives, they are still standing on the same shaky foundation of their shared past. It asks the question: Can you ever truly remodel your soul, or are you stuck with the framing you were born with?
The Construction Pairing: A "Hard Hat" Syrah Since we’re currently operating more as a construction site than a tasting room, we’re keeping the pairing grounded and sturdy.
The Sip: We’re featuring a Bold Southern Syrah. It’s a "working man’s" luxury—dark, jammy, and structured with enough tannin to hold its own against a heavy meal (or a long day of painting).
Why it works: Much like our shop right now, this wine has grip. It’s not a light, airy vintage; it’s deep and earthy. As you read about Vernice and Annie trying to shore up their relationship, the weight of this Syrah serves as the perfect anchor.
Concrete might be poured this week, but we want to know what you’re laying the foundation for this spring. Like the characters in Kin, are you revisiting an old relationship or building something brand new? Drop a comment below and tell us: If you could only have ONE book on your shelf when we finally open our doors, what would it be? We’re taking notes for our opening stock!
Happy Reading!
